A farm at the pier?

In the early days of 2008 I was a small one woman operation doing farm dinners at my own mini farm and at farms around Malibu. When the operation outgrew the backyard set up I searched for a commercial location with gardens. I proposed to the landlord at Trancas Canyon (where the nursery later opened) to open a cafe surrounded by plants. I approached a property up Topanga Canyon which had a large yard perfect for growing, but to my then disappointment neither of these locations came to realization.

When the Malibu Pier opportunity presented itself, it was my only option and so I took the plunge.

Everyone I consulted asked if it would still be Malibu Farm on the Pier, and the consensus from those I spoke to, was to change the name, and that it would be very strange to be Malibu Farm on a pier.

But what name would this be? The pier at the time had been vacant for years after a Ruby's diner and Beachcomber cafe apparanty, (according to rumours) vacated the pier in the middle of the night. Many restaurateurs had then been courted to take over the pier restaurant operations, including supposedly Wolfgang Puck, but everyone passed. Today everyone says it is the best location (which it is) but at the time the Malibu Pier had been vacant for years, with no operating businesses and only a few fishermen and homeless people hanging around. No restaurateur apparently believed in the pier, which is how I am here.

I rolled the dice and kept my name and so a farm on the pier we are!

Today we are known under many names and monikers on google and google maps and other internet search sites:

  • Malibu Farm at the pier
  • The Farm at the pier
  • Malibu Farm cafe
  • Malibu Farm pier cafe
  • Malibu Farm restaurant and bar
  • Malibu farm Pier restaurant and bar and so on!

But what remains true is we are Malibu Farm and we are on the Malibu Pier and we hope to see you here!
